Gently Feral,
Right on..... One of the least attractive aspects of the JW dogma is its lack of social conscience. It's a total cop-out. James 4:4 is tragically misapplied to justify their contempt for any non-JW that fails to show interest in their message.
We can no more separate ourselves from the world of mankind into which we are born than we can stop eating or breathing. The ``world'' to which James refers is the one in which the prevailing spirit is hedonism, explotative materialism and self-interest, rampant in the ancient world and little different today.
Anyone who scrutinizes Jesus ministry is struck by how he almost totally ignored doctrine in his discourse. He lavished most of his wisdom on urging people to reappraise their attitudes toward their fellow man. The parables of the Good Samaritan, The Prodigal Son and that of the Sheep and the Goats are the cornerstones of Christian doctrine.

Separate from the world
by GentlyFeral insomewhere on this vast board, dogpatch said:.
are [jws], in attitude, no part of this world?
yes, and that's what stinks on ice about separatist churches generally.

Messenger,
``Bethel compound?'' Fascinating choice of words. Right out of ``Hogan's Heroes."
That's exactly what's wrong with the place... it IS a ``compound,''and the people inside have a ``compound'' mentality. When will they ever get it? -

..... And the arrogance of rejecting support from an ``unauthorized'' apologist such as Greg! Don't they realize they need all the help they can get?

Watchtower "drama" last Sunday.
by CornerStone ini originaily said to myself that i was not going to post anything about last sundays "drama" at the dc because i did not want to stir up trouble.
but after reading about the watchtowers' less than charitable attitude toward their nyc neighbors i had a change of heart.. i sat there that morning with my wife and relatives, my eyes heavy from lack of sleep, children on either side of me already in dream land.
the drama was an old favorite; moses and korah.

Hi all,
It makes me shudder to contemplate that these nuts in Brooklyn expect nothing less than to be the sole source of input to the flock.
They may be too crafty to put it in so many words, but it's more than alright with them if JWs never read a newspaper or a magazine; so much the better to imprint their narrow, warped worldview on their flock.
I know of several Circuit and District Overseers who boast of never reading the newspapers. -

Hi Cygnus,, et al,
Although some folks on this board are loathe to admit it, part of the appeal of JWs is the plausability of at least several of their doctrines vis-a-vis the Scriptures.... after all, even a busted clock is right twice a day, as they say.
However, it's in those areas which you discuss, i.e. chronology, interpretation of prophecy and its claim to Dvine appointment (FDS) which are the least defensible of all their positions. In short, Greg should ask himself why it takes so many words and creative angst to defend postions which, if solid, ought to support themselves.
The BIG question which begs an answer is: when have these buggers when gotten anything right? Which of all the books they published more than 15 years ago have any shelf life, or can be thrust under a critic's nose and shown ``See? we predicted all of this!''
Nice try Greg; admirable; a disdpay of loyalty they don't deserve. But the big questions remain unanswered and perhaps unanswerable. -

Did Bethel Really let 900 rescue workers...
by Esmeralda in...stay in their facilities?.
my sister just called me, with the idea of 'comforting' me wt style (bad idea *lol*) i shut her down by saying "i respect that these are your religious views, but they are not mine.
" that managed to shut her up finally.. before that, though she volunteered this info, i was wondering if anyone can confirm it?.

Hi all,
There's no need to speculate as to this and whther the reports of Bethel having helped 900 fire fighters, etc. If it's true, they'll be the first to trumpet it loudly. -

``Quality Time'' in Field Service: Fact or Fiction
by Room 215 inbased on comments in various threads, it seems that many of you are acquainted with the various ``dodges'' jws use to strech out their field service time: foot-dragging, driving around on return visits from one far-flung end of the territory to the other, the skilful avoidance of contact with housholders, coffee breaks, etc.
etc.. do you have any impression of how pervasive these time-wasting such practices are, and what proportion of the time reported by jws is actually bogus and not spent productively?
or, put another way, how rare is is to encounter who just loves to go out and who uses his/her time efficiently from beginning to end?.

Hi all,
Based on comments in various threads, it seems that many of you are acquainted with the various ``dodges'' JWs use to strech out their field service time: foot-dragging, driving around on return visits from one far-flung end of the territory to the other, the skilful avoidance of contact with housholders, coffee breaks, etc. etc.
Do you have any impression of how pervasive these time-wasting such practices are, and what proportion of the time reported by JWs is actually bogus and not spent productively? Or, put another way, how rare is is to encounter who just loves to go out and who uses his/her time efficiently from beginning to end?
My impression is that such publishers/pioneers are few and far between, and that for the vast majority, going out in field service is no more than a ``feel good' exercise, an instalment payment on their New World home. Most, I think, despise it and wish it would go away, but would never dare to say so
What do you think? -

What Bethel has done per their information Line
by puppylove ini just spoke to bryce at bethel information line (hopefully this was not just nytelecom1 himself).. this is what bethel has done:.
1. donated batteries and flashlights.
2. power equipment to cut through concrete.

Hey all,
I for one am delighted that Bethel is pitching. My question to them, however, is the one they love to bombard us with, i.e ``Brothers, are doing ALL you can?''
It would seem fair to evaluate their response by weighing three factors: (1) their claim to be the world's only genuine Christians; (2) the immensity of the disaster; and (3) the magnitude and proximity to Ground Zero of their resources. -

WTC Charity: A Blown Opportunity by WTS
by Room 215 inapart from the noble imperatives of christian charity, the society's rather tepid response to the need for emergency assistance in the aftermath of the wtc tragedy across the harbor illustrates how calcified the thinking of their leadsership has become.. i know, they've accepted a few overnight jw guests and accommodated some others, but when measured against the magnitude of their resources, these meager photo-op and pr-op gestures are tiny.. by failing to sieze the moment, they blew a priceless opportunity to cut a a firebreak across what they must know will be a maelstrom of publice outrage and criticism when the dateline story runs.

Hil, Ozziepost, NYT, et al.....
As I asked in a related thread: Considering their immodest claim to being the only genuine Christians on earth, the historic immensity of the disaster, the magnitude of their resources and their priceless logistical advantage (right across the harbor from Ground Zero) is it not fair to label their tepid response ``reprehensible?'' -

I'm A Better Parent Than Any JW.
by Englishman ini was sat watching tv tonight, her ladyship was dozing after a hard day, george the cat was purring and number 3 son had fallen asleep.. number 2 son was talking on the phone to his girlfriend, number 1 was out selling finance to prospective home-buyers.. know what?
these sons of mine know that i am always on their side, no matter what they do.
i can't think of anything that they could do to stop me loving them.

Nice post, Englishman
Despite all the vapid WT rhetoric about ``a child's natural bent toward rebelliousness,'' it's remarkable how much unconditional love JW kids exhibit for mom and dad as so many submit to the dreary life their parents orchestrate for them... the guff they take at school, the parental ``no'' to every extracurricular activity that threatens to expand and broaden their horizons, the endless hours of trudging door to door and at boring meetings.
Still, by and large, they love their parents. Touching.
